Kamshet is a small town in the Sahyadri mountain range of Maharashtra, located approximately 45 kilometres west of Pune and 110 kilometres from Mumbai. It sits at an elevation ideal for paragliding, with a combination of gentle ridge lifts, strong thermals, and consistent seasonal winds that make it one of the most reliable flying sites in India.
The geography of Kamshet — rolling hills, open valleys, and scenic lakes — creates natural air currents that pilots use to soar for extended periods. The launch sites sit above Pawna Lake and Devkund Lake, giving tandem passengers sweeping aerial views that are hard to find anywhere else in peninsular India.
Kamshet has been a recognised paragliding destination since the 1990s and today hosts certified training schools, international competitions, and thousands of tandem flights every season. It is widely considered the best paragliding location near Pune and one of the top three sites in India alongside Bir Billing (Himachal Pradesh) and Yelagiri (Tamil Nadu).
The sweet spot for first-time visitors is November through January — temperatures are pleasant, visibility is excellent, and thermals are consistent enough for great flights without being too strong for beginners.
Most first-time flyers arrive at Kamshet with a mix of excitement and nerves. That is completely normal. Here is exactly what happens from the moment you arrive to the moment you land.
You meet your certified APPI pilot at the launch site. They brief you on the run-up, body position during flight, and landing. It is simple and clear — no technical knowledge needed.
You are fitted into a full harness, helmet, and gloves. The pilot checks all connections. Equipment is inspected before every flight.
You run a few steps down the slope with your pilot. The wing fills with air and lifts you off the ground. Most people say this moment — when your feet leave the earth — is the most memorable of their lives.
You soar above the Sahyadri valleys. Your pilot may use thermals to gain altitude. You can see Pawna Lake, the surrounding hills, and on clear days, parts of Pune. The sensation is smooth and peaceful — nothing like skydiving.
Your pilot guides you to the landing zone. You stand up and walk the last few steps. Most people immediately ask if they can go again.
APPI stands for the Association of Paragliding Pilots and Instructors — the world's leading international paragliding certification body. An APPI license is recognised in over 40 countries and is the global standard for both recreational pilots and professional instructors.
In India, APPI certification is also recognised by the DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation), making it the most credible qualification for anyone serious about learning to fly. When you train with a Garuda partner, your instructor holds a valid APPI teaching certification — not just a flying license.
The APPI course structure in India starts at P1 (Introductory) and progresses through P2 Basic, P2 Advanced, P3, and P4 — each level unlocking new flying sites, conditions, and techniques globally.
